Living History

After our outing this morning to Sand in the City we decided we would check out the living history going on at Fort Atkinson. It was a beautiful day to be out walking around. The weather was overcast and it was not hot at all. Little humid but we could live with that. We enjoyed walking through the rooms of the fort. We saw the quilter and tasted some sweet breads and cookies and drank some punch. The punch was raspberry with lemon and apple cider vinegar. The smell was enough to kill ya, and the flavor was to die for! Now how do we kill the smell to enjoy the drink???
Next we visited the jail where we saw the drunkard and other things they used for public drunkenness and thievery and various other crimes.

We then went on to see the weaver. Gabby did not like the feel of the wool before it was weaved into rugs.

After that we saw the carpenter and the ammunition house. The ammunition house was centered right in the middle of the fort with plenty of open space around it.

We saw the laundress, but did not partake in helping wash the clothes!

At the local store we bought jerky and saw how they made change.

Later we walked by the garden and checked out Indian relations guys! They were telling us how the Indians would gather at the fort because it was safe and they would learn about what the other tribes were doing. It was a great place to gain information and gossip! They were also making bread in their dutch oven. They burned the top!

Later we checked out the outdoor oven and headed over to the traders post, where we got to feel the furs of rabbit, coyote, deer and beaver. The hat Alex is wearing is a coyote. Trader was kind enough to pose for pictures with us.

After our visit with the trader we headed back to the fort where we checked out the seamstresses. We learned that they were the only woman allowed in the fort without having to have a pass. She told us that most of the time they spent outside of the fort. As we were getting ready to leave they lit the cannon and then handed out rations. How blessed we are for the things our ancestors went through for us to enjoy the things we do today
